‘90 Day Fiancé’: The Real Reason David Murphey Bought Lana a Cheap Ring

David Murphey and Lana’s storyline was one of the craziest on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days.

Throughout most of the season, fans were convinced that Lana was a catfish. The two had been talking for seven years yet never met in person, Lana stood him up multiple times, and she refused to talk to him outside of the dating site that Murphey paid for. But in the surprise of the season, Lana turned out to be a real person. On Murphey’s fifth attempt to meet Lana, she finally showed up and the t wo got engaged.

Despite his claims that he is an extremely wealthy man, Murphey proposed to Lana with a fake ring. Now, we finally find out why he did that.

Murphey and Lana met on a dating site that connects men with Ukrainian women. They spoke for years without ever seeing one another. Murphey went to Ukraine a number of times, but each time Lana had an excuse as to why she could not see him. After his fourth time trying to meet her failed, he hired a private investigator.

“I know I got a lot of lies from Lana,” he said on the show. “So I’m hoping the investigator will validate that Lana is who I think she is because I don’t know if I’m ready to find out if my truth is not the truth.”

But when Murphey’s friend Victoria translated the investigator’s findings, Murphey refused to accept the information.

“He truly believes that this is a scam,” she said. “Because when they checked all data and all connections, they find out this girl [has] several dating accounts.”

Despite all of the evidence that Lana could have been scamming him, Murphey returned to Ukraine to try to meet her again. This time, he went with a fake engagement ring to propose to Lana. At the end of his trip, he got down on one knee at the airport and Lana agreed to marry him.

A statement he made about past proposals during 90 Day Fiancé :Before the 90 Days was revisited during the tell-all, and David revealed that he has proposed to women before Lana. Two women in America and two in the Ukraine, and unlike Lana, some got actual diamond rings.

Lana got a cubic zirconia not because David didn't trust her, but because he didn't want the ring to depreciate in value when he returned it so she could select her real diamond ring.
