Why wasn’t Demi Lovato at the VMAs

As well as Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato was noticeably absent from last night's MTV VMAs - despite being nominated in the 'Best Dance' category with collaborators Clean Bandit for song 'Solo'.

During the ceremony, Demi took to Instagram Stories to tell fans about why she chose not to attend the video music awards ceremony. "I skipped the VMAs for a reason," she wrote to her 73.4million followers.

"Well that and I just hate award shows."

While her explanation admittedly didn't ~really~ explain why she was a no show, many fans think it was meant to be shady towards Taylor Swift, thanks to the timing of her post.

The Instagram Story was shared right after Taylor, 29, picked up the coveted Video Of The Year award - something that didn't go unnoticed by fans on Twitter.

"I feel like Demi Lovato just needs to get over herself and join in on the goddam [sic] celebration that is Taylor Swift winning two VMA awards for the 'You Need To Calm Down' music video," one person wrote.

Another added, "Demi Lovato being shady about Taylor Swift winning Video Of The Year at the # VMAs. ARE WE SURPRISED?" while a third said, "Demi Lovato being vocal and shady about Taylor Swift only makes her look like a hypocrite."

It's unclear whether the story is actually about Taylor, or why it would be. But the pair don't exactly have the friendliest history, which most recently came to a head when it emerged Scooter Braun had purchased Taylor's whole back catalogue.

When Taylor took to Tumblr to accuse Scooter of "incessant, manipulative bullying", Demi took to Instagram stories to defend her music manager. She wrote:

"I have dealt with bad people in this industry and Scooter is not one of them. He's a good man. Personally, I'm grateful he came into my life when he did. Please stop 'dragging' people or bullying them. There's enough hate in this world as it is. Y'all can come after me all you want but I'm always gonna stay loyal to my team. I value loyalty more than most people in this world and if my name is gonna be brought into conversations I'm gonna stay up for myself and the ones on my team."
